Artist in Attendance
Madison Gallery is proud to present ÈCRITURE, the eighth solo exhibition of renowned American artist Donald Martiny, on view from February 21 to April 18, 2026, with an opening reception on March 7, from 6–8PM.
In ÈCRITURE, Martiny debuts a groundbreaking new body of work inspired by the early works of Henri Matisse and Hans Hartung. The exhibition explores the essential act of mark-making — the foundational gesture that lies at the heart of all visual expression. Here, Martiny deepens his conceptual and material investigation into the gesture as both language and form, bridging painting, writing, and sculpture.
Each of Martiny’s monumental brushstrokes is a sculptural record of movement — painted not on canvas but formed by hand using custom polymer mediums, pigments, and resins. These gestures are bold yet intimate, revealing traces of breath, rhythm, intention.
“Marks are the foundation upon which artwork is built,” Martiny states. “My gestures are not just actions but stories—stories layered with history, presence, and emotion.” Donald Martiny
Born in 1953 in Schenectady, NY, Donald Martiny lives and works in Connecticut. He studied at the School of Visual Arts, Art Students League, NYU, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work is included in the collections of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Courtauld Institute, Cameron Art Museum, and others. In 2015, he was commissioned by the Durst Organization to create two monumental works for the lobby of *One World Trade Center* in New York City.
