Living and working in Guérande, France, Cédrix Crespel's painting is eminently linked to his life, to that of a man whose language of love and relationship to the sensual have constantly been questioned, broken down. The artist declines in his paintings different representations of femininity and reinvents the codes of desire.
"My painting explores connection, that field of vibration between two beings, between two presences. In Paris, this relationship took shape through the body, intimacy, proximity. In the United States, it opens to the world. The nocturnal landscape becomes in turn a space of relation, a place where light, matter, and memory converse like a couple.
The paintings of feminine figures also belong to the night. They were born from images captured in darkness, illuminated by the light of a bedroom, by the glow of a house still awake. That inner brightness now responds to the more distant light of American landscapes, two lights of the same hour. A quiet continuity settles between these scenes.
As in Georgia O’Keeffe’s work, nature and the body mirror each other, bound by the same tension. The tension between intimacy and the world becomes a question of light, of time, of breath.
These paintings are not about the night itself, but about what it allows, the meeting of opposites, the fragile balance between appearance and disappearance. The night acts as an envelope, a unifying field where figure and landscape, the personal and the universal, love and time, converge. I paint to hold, not to freeze. To keep alive what drifts away, to give form to presence as it approaches abstraction. In the substance of a sky or a rock, in the shadow or brightness of a fragment of body, it is always Her that appears. This enduring relation, persisting even as it blends with the world." - Cédrix Crespel
