Lal Batman

Artist in Residence

Madison Gallery is proud to present a month-long Artist Residency with acclaimed Istanbul-based artist Lal Batman from June 3 through July 3, offering a rare opportunity for Southern California audiences to engage directly with one of the most compelling emerging voices in contemporary art. Internationally recognized for her exhibitions at Art Basel and celebrated for her ability to bridge cultural histories through a distinctly contemporary visual language, Batman is among the most exciting artists working today. As her global profile continues to rise, this residency brings a significant international artistic voice to San Diego, creating a unique moment of cultural exchange and positioning Southern California at the forefront of an important contemporary art conversation.

Known internationally for her exhibitions at Art Basel and other leading art platforms, Batman has garnered attention for her interdisciplinary practice, which creates unexpected encounters between historical references and contemporary visual culture. Through layered compositions that merge digital processes, painting, sculpture, installation, and video, her work examines how cultural memory is reshaped in the present, drawing visual connections across ancient civilizations and contemporary societies spanning the Middle East, South America, the Far East, and the West.

Batman transforms surfaces into fields of inquiry, combining digitally produced patterns with ink, acrylic, carved paper, natural stones, glass, and pearls to create richly textured works that invite viewers to navigate multiple temporal and cultural perspectives. Her immersive installations challenge conventional visual hierarchies and encourage audiences to inhabit, rather than simply observe, the work.

As San Diego continues to emerge as a destination for international contemporary art, Batman's residency represents a significant cultural moment for the region. This special residency provides unprecedented access to an artist whose practice bridges global histories, contemporary aesthetics, and cross-cultural dialogue—making it one of the most important artist engagements in Southern California this summer.
