Lin Utzon Danish, b. 1946

Biography

Lin Utzon (DK, 1946), a Danish, post-war and contemporary artist, studied and lived in Sydney, Copenhagen and Japan and currently lives in Mallorca, Spain. She works internationally in different media such as porcelain, granite, tiles and cement, wood and lacquer, metal and glass. She also paints in oil on canvas and paper, gouache and ink on paper.

From a very young age she became interested in the inspirational potential of nature in a work that began in Mallorca 26 years ago with black and white pictorial works about the landscape strength of the island. She was also inspired by the manufacture of clay and porcelain in Japan, first at the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory (now Royal Scandinavia) and later at Rosendahl, which led to his processes with popular ceramics in Mallorca and its derivations. Her first public project was the Bagsvaerd Church, the church that her father, the famous architect Jørn Utzon (architect for the Sydney Opera House), built in Denmark and where Lin carried out the decoration.

Throughout Lin Utzon's work there is a progression from monumental architecture to changing scales that generate new visions from the individual to the collective. Utzon has had numerous solo exhibitions and her works have been shown in galleries and museums around the world; her career has been marked by a number of notable achievements, such as being selected to represent her country for the Danish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Utzon's creations also include costumes and sets for the Royal Danish Ballet.
