San Diego, California July 18th – Madison Gallery proudly presents Dusseldorf, Germany-based Artist, Max Frintrop’s first West Coast solo exhibition, UNCHARTED. Known for his large-scale, abstract-surrealist paintings, Frintrop’s work invites the viewer to look beyond.
Max Frintrop, born in Oberhausen in 1982, now lives and works in Dusseldorf. After studying under Albert Oehlen at the Dusseldorf Art Academy, Frintrop became interested in combining the emotive, gestural quality of abstract expressionism and the relative rigidity of constructivism. Frintrop’s interest in industrial-age machinery and his time spent around large-scale manufacturing influenced the hard lines, rigid placement of paint, and significant size of his work. Still playing into the spontaneity of gestural abstraction, Frintrop has created a perfectly balanced duality.
Frintrop’s influences collided into his very distinctive style; one that utilized the organic and sentimental marks of his favored mediums: acrylic and pigment. His vibrant color palette, yet abundance of negative space creates tangible tension within his works, as he seeks to find a balance between “precision and looseness”.
The exhibition features a new body of work created during the gallery’s inaugural Artist in Residency program. As the first artist selected for the program, the collection reflects the artist’s experience on the West Coast vibe. UNCHARTED explores the visceral experience of light through new eyes and the chance of new beginnings. We will be offering studio visits with the artist while he is in residency by appointment.
