Cédrix Crespel: Hold Back The Night
San Diego CA – Madison Gallery is proud to present Hold Back the Night, a solo exhibition by acclaimed French contemporary artist Cedrix Crespel, on view from September 30 through November 15. An opening reception with the artist will be held on Saturday, October 10, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
Hold Back the Night presents a compelling new body of work exploring the fragile threshold between intimacy and landscape, memory and presence, light and darkness. Created between France and the United States, these paintings expand Crespel’s deeply personal visual language into a broader meditation on human connection and our emotional relationship with the natural world.
Known for his richly atmospheric compositions and poetic sensibility, Crespel transforms the nocturnal landscape into a place where light, matter, and memory exist in quiet dialogue. Where his earlier work centered on the intimacy of human relationships, these new paintings embrace the vastness of the American landscape, revealing the night as a unifying space where personal experience becomes universal.
Throughout the exhibition, feminine figures emerge from darkness, illuminated by the soft glow of interior spaces. These moments of quiet intimacy echo the distant lights scattered across American landscapes, creating a seamless visual conversation between interior and exterior worlds. Together, they reflect the enduring nature of love, memory, and presence.
Reminiscent of Georgia O’Keeffe’s ability to unite the body and nature, Crespel allows figures, skies, stone, and shadow to mirror one another. His paintings inhabit the space between representation and abstraction, where emotion becomes embedded within the landscape itself.
Rather than depicting the night, Crespel explores what darkness makes possible: stillness, vulnerability, reflection, and transformation. The night becomes an enveloping field where opposites meet—figure and landscape, the intimate and the infinite, memory and time.
As the artist explains:
“I paint to hold, not to freeze. To keep alive what drifts away, to give form to presence as it approaches abstraction. In the substance of a sky or a rock, in the shadow or brightness of a fragment of body, it is always Her that appears. This enduring relation persists even as it blends with the world.”
